The i16 prototype was a close-to-final design that had the potential to replace the i8. However, it never came to fruition. BMW’s design chief, Domagoj Dukec, recently shared the concept sketches on social media, describing it as a “future classic.”
Dukec hinted that they utilized the carbon composite structure of the i8, and in less than a year, the car was ready for launch. The i16 was planned to come with even more power and a more exotic design than the i8, while still using the same carbon core. The 2019 M Vision concept employed a Turbo 4-cylinder engine along with electric motors, which delivered more than 600 horsepower.
“We had to discontinue the project due to the changes that occurred in the world in 2020,” said Dukec. “Even though we made an effort to move forward, ultimately we were unable to continue with the work.”
But that’s how life goes sometimes. As designers, we are familiar with such projects’ many twists and turns. Nevertheless, we’ll never stop dreaming and exploring new possibilities, and there’s always a new project waiting around the corner.
